Calcium silicate is the insulation material chosen when the product has to hold its shape. Most industrial insulation is soft — blankets and wools that insulate well but compress under any sustained load — and that becomes a problem at pipe supports, beneath cladding, on high-pressure steam lines, and anywhere a lining carries weight. Crushed insulation is not merely thinner; it becomes a permanent thermal bridge that conducts heat straight through the system at exactly the points hardest to inspect. Calcium silicate solves this by being a rigid, machinable board with real compressive strength, rated to 1000°C, that keeps its thickness for the life of the installation. It is more expensive per square metre than mineral wool and does not reach the temperatures ceramic fibre does, so it is not a general-purpose material — it is specified deliberately where rigidity or load-bearing capability governs. Calcium silicate board (1000°C)
Rigid board for high-temperature backup insulation behind refractory hot faces, on preheater and cooler shells, and wherever the insulation must be structurally stable at up to 1000°C.
Calcium silicate insulation board (650°C)
Lower-temperature rigid board for steam lines, vessel insulation, and load-bearing positions where the service temperature does not justify the higher-rated grade.

How to Choose the Right Calcium Silicate Products
Specify calcium silicate when rigidity or load-bearing capability is the governing requirement, not simply when a high temperature is involved. The clearest cases are pipe supports, where soft insulation crushes into a thermal bridge; high-pressure steam lines, where cladding and support loads act on the insulation continuously; and structural backup behind a refractory hot face, where the insulation forms part of the lining system rather than a wrap around it. Choose the temperature grade against the actual surface temperature — the 650°C board covers most steam and process duty economically, and the 1000°C grade is reserved for backup insulation behind hot faces and on high-temperature shells. Where the requirement is simply to cover a large low-temperature area with no load, mineral wool is more economical and equally effective. Above 1000°C, calcium silicate is out of range and ceramic fibre or refractory materials are required at the hot face.

- Butt board joints tightly and stagger them between layers so no joint runs straight through the insulation thickness.
- Keep boards dry before and during installation — calcium silicate absorbs water and needs to dry out fully before the system reaches service temperature.
- Machine and cut boards to fit irregular geometry rather than forcing them; forced board cracks and loses its structural function.
- Clad and seal outdoor installations properly; rigidity does not protect against moisture ingress, which still degrades performance.

Calcium silicate vs mineral wool
Calcium silicate is rigid and holds thickness under sustained load; mineral wool compresses. Use calcium silicate at supports, on high-pressure steam, and in load-bearing positions, and mineral wool across large unloaded areas where its lower cost per square metre wins.
Calcium silicate vs ceramic fibre
Ceramic fibre reaches 1260°C and has much lower thermal mass; calcium silicate stops at 1000°C but carries load. They are usually combined — fibre at the hot face, calcium silicate as rigid backup — rather than chosen against each other.
1000°C board vs 650°C board
The higher grade is for backup insulation behind refractory hot faces and on high-temperature shells. The 650°C grade covers most steam line and vessel duty at lower cost, and specifying the higher grade where it is not needed adds expense without extending service life.
Calcium silicate vs foil-faced insulation
Below about 150°C the controlling issue is usually moisture rather than load, and foil-faced insulation with a sealed vapour barrier is the better answer. Calcium silicate is specified where the mechanical requirement dominates, typically at higher temperatures and at support points.
