Mineral wool — including rockwool — is the workhorse of industrial insulation, and its case rests on cost per square metre rather than on any exceptional property. Most of the insulated surface area in a typical plant is not furnace hot face; it is ducting, casings, vessels, tanks, and long runs of pipework operating well below 1000°C. Insulating that area with a premium high-temperature product would be a poor use of budget, and mineral wool covers it economically while still delivering good thermal performance, non-combustibility, and useful acoustic attenuation. It has two real limitations that determine where it should not be used. It compresses under sustained load, so it is the wrong material at pipe supports and on high-pressure steam lines where rigid board is required. And it loses most of its insulating value permanently if it gets wet, which makes vapour barrier integrity and cladding detail as important as the specification itself. How to Choose the Right Mineral Wool Products

Mineral wool is the default for any surface below its temperature rating that does not carry load and is not in a wet environment without proper protection. Choose the form by geometry: board for flat casings and duct walls, blanket for curved and irregular surfaces, roll for long continuous pipe runs where minimising joints matters. Check the temperature grade carefully, because the range within the family is wide — rockwool blanket at 600°C and rockwool board at 1000°C are not interchangeable, and specifying the blanket grade on a hotter surface will degrade it quickly. Where insulation sits at a pipe support, beneath cladding under sustained load, or on a high-pressure steam line, switch to calcium silicate for those positions rather than accepting the compression. And in any outdoor or humid installation, treat the vapour barrier and cladding detail as part of the specification, because wet mineral wool does not recover.

Installation & Handling Notes

  • Fit a continuous vapour barrier and seal all laps in humid or outdoor installations — wet mineral wool does not recover its performance on drying.
  • Orient cladding laps to shed water, particularly on horizontal runs where upward-facing laps admit rain directly into the insulation.
  • Switch to rigid board at pipe supports rather than compressing mineral wool, which crushes into a permanent thermal bridge at exactly those points.
  • Check the temperature grade against the actual surface temperature; 600°C blanket and 1000°C board are not interchangeable.
  • Replace persistently wet sections rather than drying them in place, and correct the ingress route at the same time.

Mineral Wool Compared to Other Materials

Rock wool vs glass wool

Rockwool generally handles higher temperatures and has better fire performance and density, making it the standard choice for industrial plant. Glass wool is lighter and cheaper but its lower temperature capability limits it largely to building services rather than process duty.

Mineral wool vs ceramic fibre

Ceramic fibre reaches 1260°C against roughly 1000°C for rockwool board, and has far lower thermal mass. Mineral wool costs considerably less per square metre, which is decisive across the large medium-temperature areas that make up most of a plant's insulated surface.

Mineral wool vs calcium silicate

Calcium silicate is rigid and carries load; mineral wool compresses. Use calcium silicate at pipe supports and on high-pressure steam, and mineral wool everywhere the insulation is simply covering area without structural duty.

Board holds shape on flat casings and duct walls, blanket conforms to curved and irregular surfaces, and roll minimises joints on long continuous pipe runs. The choice is driven by the geometry being covered rather than by thermal performance, which is comparable across the forms.

How long does mineral wool insulation last?

In a dry, correctly clad installation within its temperature range, mineral wool has a long service life and degrades slowly. In practice, life is usually determined by moisture ingress and mechanical damage rather than by thermal ageing — a wet or crushed installation loses performance long before the material would otherwise wear out.

What is the difference between rock wool and glass wool?

Rockwool generally handles higher temperatures and offers better fire performance and density, which is why it is standard for industrial plant. Glass wool is lighter and cheaper but its lower temperature capability restricts it largely to building services rather than process applications.

What temperature can rockwool insulation withstand?
