Most short refractory and insulation campaigns are caused by specifying the wrong resistance property, not by an inadequate temperature rating. A lining lost to alkali attack in a cement preheater will not last longer because someone specified a higher temperature grade; it needs lower porosity. A lining spalling in a cycling zone needs thermal shock resistance, not compressive strength. A kiln burning ore needs hardness. Temperature is a threshold to clear, not the selection criterion — and treating it as the criterion is the single most common and expensive error in this field. When You Need This
Before a reline where the previous campaign underperformed, when commissioning new equipment, after a fuel or feed change that alters the chemical environment, or when the same zone keeps failing early despite using a nominally correct material. It is also worth doing before a large insulation capital spend, since a thermal survey often redirects the budget to where the recoverable loss actually is.
Technical Consultation & Material Selection FAQs
Why do linings fail before their temperature rating suggests?
Because temperature is rarely the wear mechanism. Linings are lost to chemical attack, thermal spalling, or abrasion, and a material chosen only for its temperature rating may have poor resistance to whichever of those actually governs in that position.
Does a higher temperature rating always mean longer life?
No, and assuming it does wastes money. Once a material is comfortably above the service temperature, further increases in rating buy nothing unless they come with the resistance property that matters. A denser, lower-porosity grade at the same rating often lasts several times longer in chemical service.
Should the whole vessel use the same grade?
Usually not. Different positions face different mechanisms — a ladle slag line is lost to chemical dissolution while the barrel below faces much milder duty. Zoning the lining is more economical than lining everything in the grade only one zone needs.
What information do you need to advise?
Equipment type and zone, continuous operating temperature at the surface, fuel and feed chemistry, duty cycle, achieved campaign life, and ideally photographs of the wear pattern. The wear pattern is often the most informative single input.
Can you help with insulation as well as refractory?
Yes. The two are part of one lining system — hot face refractory, backup insulation, anchoring, and sealing. Specifying them separately is how gaps in backup insulation and degraded seals end up undoing an otherwise sound reline.
